Japan’s 2020 Cherry Blossom Set Is Ready to Bloom in Your Collection

Each year, Japan celebrates its cherry blossom viewing festival. This custom is an incredibly important part of Japanese culture, and dates back nearly 1,000 years. The festival takes place all over Japan, with more than 1,000 locations hosting celebrations. At many of these locations, visitors can secure special Cherry Blossom Viewing coin sets from the Japan Mint. While the events were canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sets were still issued—and now we’re making them available to collectors while supplies last!

Cherry Blossoms in Japanese Culture

The significance for Japan’s reverent devotion to cherry blossoms goes back several centuries. For the Japanese people, cherry blossoms represent the fragility of life — a poignant reminder that life, while very beautiful, is also tragically short. These sets contain the six circulating Japanese coins ranging in denomination from 1-Yen aluminum coin all the way up to the 500 Yen nickel-brass coin. Plus, each set also contains a pure silver medal that features a one-year-only reverse. This year’s design features a mouse to mark 2020 being the Year of the Mouse. Each set will come sealed in an acrylic holder with a colorful inset depicting vibrant images of Japan’s cherry trees in bloom.
