The Jewish Wars With Rome!

The walls around the Old City of Jerusalem were designed to protect the city’s borders against attacks from various enemies in ancient times. By August A.D. 70, the Romans had breached the final defenses and massacred much of what was left of the city’s population. It was the final exclamation point on a centuries long campaign by the Romans to subdue Judea and establish a foothold in the Middle East. With this wonderful collection of six ancient bronze Roman and Judean coins you can see that history unfold in vivid detail!

A Numismatic History Of The Holy Land

Struck between 138 B.C. and A.D. 70, these coins present a numismatic history of the Holy Land in the tumultuous period from the rise of the Hasmonean kings to the fall of the Second Temple. It covers the most historically significant timeframe in the region’s history and informs much of what has continued to happen in this geographical area since then. Each coin is an authentic piece of history with an average age of around 2,000 years old!

Rome Tightens The Screws On Judea

Judea was a strategic area ripe for Roman occupation. After spending several years campaigning against its greatest and most dangerous competitor, the Parthian Empire, Rome cast its eyes on Syria and what later became Judea province where new bases for Roman legions could be erected in defense of the empire. Roman General Pompey—he of the First Triumvirate along with Caesar and Crassus—finally besieged Jerusalem in 63 B.C. Early Roman occupation of Judea was tenuous as the supply lines to the Middle East were long and overextended. Rome, therefore, could ill afford to have the Jews revolt. Roman rule was not heavy-handed at first, but in the coming decades thousands of Jews were imprisoned, tortured, and crucified. Thousands more were sold into slavery with the fittest becoming gladiators that fought in arenas throughout the empire. This was the situation in Judea when Jesus was born and began his preaching.
