The Rich Legacy Of The Sioux Nation

The Sioux are a confederacy of three tribes—the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota—that roamed the Northern Great Plains from Minnesota to Montana. The Lakota was the largest tribe and is comprised of seven tribal bands: Brule, Oglala, Sans Arc, Hunkpapa, Miniconjou, Blackfeet, and Two Kettles. Led by such famous chiefs as Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse; it was the Lakota people that resisted white encroachment on their lands and fiercely battled the U.S. Army for more than 30 years throughout the mid-to-late 1800s. The name Sioux derives from the Ojibwe word “Nadowessioux” which means “Enemy.” The word was shortened to “Sioux” by French explorers. Famous for their hunting and warrior culture, the ultimate honor a warrior could earn was counting coup—the act of touching a live enemy during battle.
