Paying Tribute To Mohawk Culture And History

The Native American Mint’s coin sets honoring different tribes continues with the 2024 Mohawk Tribe Set. Known for their distinctive hairstyle that has been mimicked by today’s legion of punk rockers, the Mohawk Indians created the look when they prepared for war by shaving the sides of their heads, leaving just a thin strip of hair down the middle. The name Mohawk comes from a term their enemies called them that meant “man-eaters” in respect to the Mohawk warriors fierce combat skills.

Legal-Tender Native American Coins

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.

One-Year-Only Designs Honor Mohawk Culture

The Mohawk Tribe Six-Piece Set features six different obverse designs depicting images important to Mohawk culture, tradition, and history. Among the designs are a bear symbolizing power and wisdom, a log-and-bark longhouse, and a mask worn by False Face Society members—a group of so-called “medicine men” who served as healers. Also featured on the coin is a portrait of Mohawk political and military leader Thayendanegea (1743–1807), who was also known as Joseph Brandt after his sister, Molly Brant, married Sir William Johnson, the influential British Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Thayendanegea allied with the British and led Mohawks and Colonial loyalists in a series of bitter engagements that resulted in him acquiring the nickname of “Monster Brant” for supposed atrocities he committed against the Americans.

Since the Mohawk Tribe was located in the easternmost area of the colonies, they were the first to encounter European explorers and establish trade. Although they are involved in many professions, contemporary Mohawk people may be best known for their work on high steel construction projects, including the Empire State Building and the George Washington Bridge, both in New York City. Mohawks are the “People of the Flint” within the Iroquois/Six Nation Confederacy. As the easternmost Nation within the Confederacy, they were also referred to as the “Keepers of Eastern Door.”
