Paying Tribute To Choctaw Culture And History
The Native American Mint’s coin sets honoring different tribes continues with the 2024 Choctaw Tribe Set. Considered as one of the “Five Civilized Tribes” of the Southeast by early European Americans, the Choctaw Tribe, despite never having waged war against the United States and serving with the Americans against the British during the Revolutionary War, were forcibly relocated from 1831 to 1833 to Oklahoma in what was then “Indian Territory.” Fierce warriors, many Choctaw men served as “Code Talkers” for the United States military during World War I and World War II.
Legal-Tender Native American Coins
Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
One-Year-Only Designs Honor Choctaw Culture
The Choctaw Tribe Six-Piece Set features six different obverse designs depicting images important to Choctaw culture, tradition, and history. Among the designs are a pair based on the work of famed western artist George Catlin (1796–1872), who wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. One image shows a trio of Choctaw stickball players painted sometime in the early 1840s. Ishtaboli, as the game was called by the Choctaw, was famous for its aggressive and physical play. The game was so important to the Choctaw that it was used to mediate social relations, village conflicts, and tensions between tribal members. Another Catlin design is a portrait of Choctaw tribal leader Tul-lock-chísh-ko (Drinks the Juice of the Stone) that was painted in 1834.
The Choctaw Tribe traditionally lived in what today is part of the southeastern U.S. Before 1820, Choctaw territory encompassed more than 23 million acres, primarily in present-day Mississippi, and extended into sections of present-day Alabama and Louisiana. During the Revolutionary War, Choctaw companies joined Washington’s army, and served the entire duration. European Americans considered the Choctaw to be one of the “Five Civilized Tribes” of the Southeast. The Choctaw and the United States agreed to a total of nine treaties which led to vast land cessions in the Southeast and the forced removal of the majority of Choctaw to Indian Territory in Oklahoma from 1831 to 1833 despite never having waged war against the United States.
