150 Years Of United States Silver Dollars
The American Dollar has been a staple of commerce in the United States since the first silver dollar was struck in 1794, a span of more than 230 years! Here you can get a jaw-dropping set of FIVE U.S. Silver Dollars that range from the reign of the Morgan Silver Dollar which first struck in 1878 all the way up to today’s latest American Silver Eagle:
- MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR 1878–1921 – It’s been more than 100 years since the last Morgan Silver Dollar—named for their designer, Geroge T. Morgan—was struck for circulation. The most collected vintage U.S. Silver Dollar ever, the Morgan was the coin that helped build the Wild West. Cowboys, ranchers, outlaws... they all preferred to carry Morgans in their saddle bags. Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine American silver mined from the fabulous Comstock Lode, the largest silver strike in United States history, Morgans were minted from 1878 to 1904, then again for one final time in 1921. Experts believe as few as 15% of all Morgans struck still exist today, and this one will come in Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
- PEACE SILVER DOLLAR 1921–1935 – The Peace Dollar is America’s last circulating silver dollar struck in 90% fine silver. Intended as a one-year release struck in high relief to commemorate the end of World War I, the coin was minted for a total of 10 years between 1921 and 1935. Unlike the Morgan Dollar, Peace Dollars were not nearly as prolific, with far fewer releases and just a third the number of total coins released to the public. Many Peace Dollars were also damaged during circulation so finding nice examples today can be difficult. Like the Morgan, it was struck in 26.73 grams of 90% fine silver. It’s estimated that as few as 16% Peace Dollar struck still exist today and this one will come in Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
- EIENHOWER DOLLAR 1971–1978 – The Eisenhower “Ike” Dollar was America’s last large-sized dollar minted for circulation. It also lasted for just eight years, from 1971 to 1978. But while these coins were struck from copper-nickel, a small number of 40% fine silver Ike Dollars were also struck by the U.S. Mint just for collectors from 1971 to 1974 and again in 1976. As the first—and last—40% silver dollars in United States Mint history, these historic coins hold a special place in every collection. This coin honored World War II General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his bust is featured on the obverse. The reverse features an eagle landing on the moon. This beauty will come in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
- AMERICAN SILVER EAGLE TYPE I 1986 – 2021 – America’s first silver bullion coin, the $1 Silver Eagle has been struck each year from 1986 through today. While every year features the same obverse design—Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design that appeared on the Half-Dollar struck from 1916 to 1947—the reverse from 1986 to 2021 featured the Heraldic Eagle design as crafted by John Mercanti, the most prolific coin and medal designer in U.S. Mint history! These coins were struck on one-ounce planchets of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. This coin will come in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
- AMERICAN SILVER EAGLE TYPE II 2021 – 2024 – In honor of the Silver Eagle’s 35th Anniversary, The U.S. Mint phased out Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design midway through 2021 and replaced it with Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Emily Damstra’s full bodied Bald Eagle coming in for a landing. The design change led to the 1986–2021 Mercanti-designed Silver eagles being referred to as Type I Silver Eagles and the 2021—2024 Damstra-designed Silver Eagles referred to as Type II Silver Eagles. This Type II coin will come in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
