These Wyoming Goldbacks Will Put Some Gold Back In Your Collection

There’s a voluntary unit of local currency that exists in Wyoming called “Goldbacks,” 24-karat gold foil notes that are crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of highly pure 99.99% fine gold. Already, many local merchants and vendors are accepting this new form of currency as payment. What’s more, they can be accepted in other states that allow the usage of these intriguing and beautifully designed notes.

Wafer-Thin Gold Foil Currency Notes

Each wafer-thin note is coated with a protective plastic cover so it can be circulated, exchanged, and used without the gold tearing. They’re meant to be used just like cash to purchase items. If you travel through Wyoming, you’ll probably even see signs that say “Goldbacks Accepted Here” to let you know these fractional gold units can be spent just like any other form of legal-tender currency. Anyone can own Goldbacks, even if they aren’t a resident of Wyoming.

Representations Of Allegorical Figures

Not only is each Goldback crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of pure gold (1 Aurum), but they are also fabulous examples of the engraver’s art—and the larger the denomination, the bigger the note. The design on each denomination features an allegorical depiction of one of the lady virtues and combines her with distinct symbols representing different aspects of Wyoming history and culture. The back of each note displays the negative image of the front illustration, which also serves as a security feature. The notes in this set are:

  • The 1 Aurum 1/1000th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Lady Reverentia shown as a Shoshone woman alongside a Bald Eagle and surrounded by sunflowers. She is depicted standing in Wyoming’s Northeastern plains region with Devil’s Tower in the background and an American buffalo in the foreground.
  • The 5 Aurum 1/200th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Lady Audentia depicted here as a rodeo queen in Western attire along with her faithful horse surrounded by roses and thorns.
  • The 10 Aurum 1/100th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Lady Fiducia as pioneer woman surrounded by beautiful birch trees. She is shown carrying a basket of birch wood on her back while the famous formation of Split Rock and a team of oxen pulling a wagon can be seen in the background.
  • The 25 Aurum 1/40th-oz gold note depicts Lady Fideletas as a ranch girl waiting for her groom to arrive for their wedding. The log Episcopal Chapel of the Transfiguration can be seen in the background. Completed in 1925, the log chapel is located in Grand Teton National Park.
  • The 50 Aurum 1/20th-oz gold note features Lady Libertas depicted as a 1950s-era hiker in Yellowstone National Park surrounded by wild flowering raspberries. In the background are images of Old Faithful erupting alongside a depiction of Osprey Falls accompanied by wolves and a mother grizzly bear.
