Complete Susan B. Anthony Proof Set

Oh, that poor Susan B. Anthony Dollar. Introduced by the United States Mint in 1979, the coin was intended to replace the dollar bill and was our first-ever small-sized dollar coin. It was also the first United States circulating coin to feature an identifiable woman! Unfortunately, the coin’s size and silvery color made it too easily confused with a Washington Quarter, and never caught on with the public. Ironically, that short minting period has now made it one of the most popular U.S. coins among collectors!

This four-piece set of Susan B. Anthony Dollars, dated 1979-S, 1980-S, 1981-S and 1999-P, not only features all four years the coin was struck, but each also comes in gorgeous Proof condition struck from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. Proofs mintages were tiny compared to the mintages of circulated Susan B. Anthony Dollars—just 1.34%!

The Nation’s Shortest-Lived Coin Series

The Susan B. Anthony Dollar remains a significant coin in in United States history. It features the portrait of a noted woman’s rights pioneer Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906) whose work led to the passage of the 19th Constitutional Amendment assuring women of the right to vote. The prevailing theory is that the coin was too close in size to a U.S. quarter. A situation that caused confusion at cash registers and resulted in an overall rejection of the coin by people across the country who didn’t accept it as their new currency. Perhaps in response to the public’s disdain for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the U.S. Mint struck if for only three years from 1979 to 1981 and then for one final time in 1999, becoming the nation’s shortest-lived coin series.

It’s hard to believe that these coins are all more than 20 years old! Take advantage of this opportunity and add this interesting piece of U.S. numismatic history to your collection today!
