On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Months later in 1964, the U.S. Mint revealed the nation’s new half dollar bearing the former president’s likeness. Originally struck in 90% fine silver, the coin was struck for the next five years in 40% silver — the first and only 40% silver coin ever struck for circulation — and then copper-nickel from 1971 onward.

This four-coin type set brings together the original 90% silver 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, a 40% silver Half Dollar struck between 1965 and 1970 (date varies), a 1971 copper-nickel Half Dollar, and the one-year-only 1976 Bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence Half Dollar. Each set comes housed in a custom storycard.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

• POPULAR DESIGN OF A FALLEN PRESIDENT – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ bust of President John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy Half-Dollar was first struck in 1964 and was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.
• STRUCK IN SILVER – Kennedy Half Dollars issued in 1964 were struck in 90% silver; and from 1965 to 1969 they were struck in 11.5 grams of 40% silver. No half dollars were struck for circulation in 1970 and beginning in 1971 they were issued as nickel-clad copper coins.
