Half Dollar Set Marks The Rookie Years Of Four Of Baseball’s Greatest Sluggers!
Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, and Ernie Banks—between them these four legendary baseball superstars accounted for 2,054 home runs and countless memories for fans of the game. Here you can get a four-piece set of half dollars—1936 Walking Liberty, 1939 Walking Liberty, 1951 Franklin, and 1954 Franklin—that were released during the rookie years of these sluggers, 1936 DiMaggio, 1939 Williams, 1951 Mays, and 1954 Banks.
- JOE DiMAGGIO – Known as the Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio won nine World Series titles in his 13-year career with the New York Yankees that ran from 1936 to 1951, with three years lost to duty in World War II. Joltin’ Joe was a three-time American League Most Valuable Player, and he holds what many consider to be the most remarkable baseball record of all, a 56-game hitting streak in 1941. A cultural icon, he was also briefly married to Marilyn Monroe. He ended his career with a .325 batting average, 361 home runs, and was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
- TED WILLIAMS – Ted Williams said that all he wanted out of life was that when he walked down the street people would say, “There goes the greatest hitter that ever lived.” Mission Accomplished. Known as the Splendid Splinter, Williams won six batting titles, two American League MVP awards, and won baseball’s triple crown (home runs, batting average, and runs batted in) two times. He was the last player to hit over .400 when he hit .406 in 1941. He ended his career with a .344 batting average and 521 home runs despite missing three seasons due to service in World War II and the Korean War. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
- WILLIE MAYS – Considered by many to be among the best all-around players in baseball history, Willie Mays was a two-time National League MVP, a 24-time All, and won 12 Gold Glove Awards in center field. He led the league in home runs four times, stolen bases four times, slugging percentage five times, total bases three times and triples three times. Nicknamed the “Say Hey Kid,” Mays finished his career with a .301 batting average and 660 home runs. Fans will forever remember “The Catch” he made during the 1954 World Series, still considered as one of the greatest defensive plays in baseball history. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.
- ERNIE BANKS – Despite playing his entire career with the perennially downtrodden Chicago Cubs, Ernie Banks never lost his enthusiasm for the game. Noted for his sunny disposition, Banks was nicknamed “Mr. Cub” and “Mr. Sunshine” while setting new standards at shortstop. Banks was also two-time National League MVP and a 14-time All-Star and finished his career with a .274 batting average and 512 home runs—numbers that are astonishing for a shortstop. He was famously quoted as saying, “It's a beautiful day for a ballgame. Let’s play two today!” He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.
