Quality 1919 Anti-Bolshevik Notes

The notes in this three-piece set are rich with Russian imagery—especially for the previously dominant Russian Monarchy. Notable motifs include flowers, wheat, Russian architecture, and double-headed eagles. Each note was issued in 1919 and is more than 100 years old. They were created and printed during the Russian Civil War, a bloody conflict from 1917 to 1923 that caused the deaths of around 10 million people and saw the adoption of Communism and the birth of the Soviet Union.

Russian Notes Crushed By The Iron Curtain

In 1917, the Russian Monarchy lost power in an uprising which led to a civil war. Russian politics were turbulent and there was a scramble for power among a wide variety of groups. The Red Army led by Vladimir Lenin eventually won the war and established the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), that spread Communism throughout eastern Europe until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The notes available here include 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 Roubles denominations and range in quality from Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF–XF) condition. That’s a remarkable grade because paper notes tend to wear out quickly—especially notes like these that were eventually crushed by the “Iron Curtain” of the Soviet Union!

Paper Currency That Escaped The Clutches Of Lenin’s Bolsheviks

Notes like these were printed by pro-monarchist forces such as the Imperial Russian Government, the Directorate of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and the White Army Armed Forces of South Russia. They started appearing for the first time around 1900 as pro-Bolshevik sentiments gained popularity and agitated for an overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II and the Romanov dynasty. These are fascinating and historic pieces that quite literally illustrate how the balance of power shifted during the Russian Civil War. Lenin and the Bolsheviks tried to destroy these notes, but you can have the last laugh by adding them to your collection today!
