Napoleon Commemorative Battle Medals
Following the end of the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of the French and conquered much of Europe. As a military commander he had few peers. During his career he engaged in more than 60 battles, winning 53 of them. Three of those victorious battles are memorialized with this three-piece set of Bronze Battle Medals:
- ARCOLE BRIDGE – One Napoleon’s first major victories, the battle of Arcole was a bloody three-day battle fought from November 15–17, 1796. The climax of the fighting saw Napoleon’s troops outflank the Austrian army and cut off its retreat, thus ensuring a decisive victory the during the War of the First Coalition. The victory also helped elevate Napoleon’s prestige and status among French military ranks and helped him gain the power and support to declare himself emperor in 1804.
- MARENGO – Considered by Napoleon to be his finest triumph when his 28,000 men whipped 31,000 Austrian troops. Fought on June 14, 1800, during the War of the Second Coalition, the French victory helped secure Napoleon’s position as First Consul as well as expelling the Austrians from most of Italy. The battle came at the end of a month-long campaign that began when Napoleon led his army across the St. Bernard Pass in May.
- AUSTERLITZ – Perhaps the most significant and decisive battle of the Napoleonic Wars, Austerlitz was the first engagement of the War of the Third Coalition, Fought on December 5, 1805, the decisive victory by Napoleon’s famed Grande Armée brought the war to a rapid conclusion. Napoleon’s 68,000 troops defeated a combined army of 90,000 Russians and Austrians led by both nation’s emperors—Russia’s Czar Alexander I and Francis I of Austria. The victory was so decisive that it set the course of European history for a decade.
