1994 Veterans In The Military Commemorative Silver Proofs

In July of 1994, the U.S. Mint released three silver proof commemoratives in tribute to military men and women. Today, more than a quarter of a century later, you can secure all three of these reverent coins in one special set. The coins include:

  • 1904-P Prisoners of War Museum Silver Proof – The National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia is seen on one side of this reverential coin while an eagle in flight is featured on the obverse. The image of the eagle is particularly poignant as it was designed by Thomas Nielsen, a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Nielsen’s design shows the eagle with a broken chain around its leg, symbolic of its flight towards freedom.
  • 1994-P Vietnam Veterans Memorial Silver Proof – This coin commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C., It features a hand gently touching the wall searching for a name. The image was designed by John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver. The creator of more than 100 coin and medal designs for the U.S. Mint, Mercanti said this was his personal favorite. The coin’s reverse features three medals: the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
  • 1994-P Women in Military Silver Proof – This coin was released to pay tribute to the contributions of women serving in the Armed Forces. The coin’s obverse was designed by T. James Ferrell and features the profile of servicewomen representing the five branches of the United States military. The reverse was designed by Thomas Rogers, Sr., and shows the approved design for the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

Gorgeous, One-Year-Only Silver Proofs

All three $1 legal-tender commemorative coins were struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver at the “Mother Mint’ in Philadelphia. They were all struck with a Proof finish, meaning they were expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. Each features its own one-year-only design, and the entire set will come beautifully displayed in a deluxe presentation case.
