First-Year Susan B. Anthony Mint Mark Set
Oh, that poor Susan B. Anthony Dollar. Introduced by the United States Mint in 1979, the coin was intended to replace the dollar bill and was our first-ever small-sized dollar coin. It was also the first U.S. circulating coin to feature an identifiable woman! Unfortunately, the coin’s size and silvery color made it too easily confused with a Washington Quarter, and never caught on with the public. Ironically, that short minting period has now made it one of the most popular U.S. coins among collectors!
The Nation’s Shortest-Lived Coin Series
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar remains a significant coin in in United States history. The prevailing theory is that it was too close in size to a U.S. quarter. A situation that caused confusion at cash registers and resulted in an overall rejection of the coin by people across the country who didn’t accept it as their new currency. Perhaps in response to the public’s disdain for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the U.S. Mint struck if for only three years from 1979 to 1981 and then for one final time in 1999, becoming the nation’s shortest-lived coin series.
This three-piece set brings together one coin from each mint that struck the Susan B. Anthony Dollar in its very first year — Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco — all in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and housed together in a wallet with detailed information on the series.
