First, 50th, And Bicentennial Kennedy Half Dollars!

60 years ago, on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. To pay tribute to the beloved American President, Congress authorized the abrupt ending of the Franklin Half Dollar series, replacing it with the Kennedy Half Dollar that featured an image personally selected by JFK’s wife, Jackie Kennedy. The initial Kennedy Half Dollars released in 1964 were struck in highly pure 90% fine silver. A year later in 1965, The Mint reduced the silver content to 40%—where it stayed until 1971 when the Mint changed the content to clad.

Key-Date Kennedy Half-Dollars

While the design of the Kennedy Half Dollar has remained mostly unchanged throughout its run—a portrait of JFK designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts on the obverse and a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965, on the reverse—there have been a couple of notable exceptions. What you have here is a three-piece set of Kennedy Half Dollars that consists of those key dates and design changes:

  • The first-year-of-issue 1964 KENNDY HALF DOLLAR struck in 90% silver. Originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President, it proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since!
  • The 1976 BICENTENNIAL KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR features a 1776–1976 date on the obverse and a portrait of Philadelphia Pennsylvania's Independence Hall with the words “200 YEARS OF FREEDOM” on the reverse to celebrate the nation’s 200th anniversary. This coin was produced from 1975 through 1976 so there were no 1975 coins.
  • The 2014 50TH ANNIVERSARY KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR features a higher relief than previous releases. The U.S. Mint released a small handful of these coins in 2014 to celebrate the iconic coin’s 50th anniversary These coins were struck from the original higher relief design that was used in the first year of issue and were available only in special mint sets.
