Marking “The War To End All Wars”

World War I led to the mobilization of more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million in Europe alone, making it one of the largest wars in history. It was also one of the deadliest, with an estimated 8.5 million combatant deaths and 13 million civilian deaths. With 2021 marking the 100th Anniversary of the end to “The War to End All Wars,” we’ve assembled a patriotic set that historians and collectors of all ages will want to add to their collections.

This set features three WWI-era coins struck from 1917 to 1918 (date our choice) and a modern coin that pays tribute to President Woodrow Wilson, who led the nation through the First World War.” The coins include:

  • 1917–1918 Lincoln Cent. The Lincoln Cent was designed by famed sculptor Victor David Brenner and was first struck in 1909 to observe the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth in 1809.It is the longest-lasting circulating coin in United States history.
  • 1917–1918 Buffalo Nickel. Created by famed American sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel is one of the most iconic coins ever struck by the United States Mint. T’s rugged Wild West design shows a realistic depiction of a Native American on the obverse and a wooly American Bison on the reverse.
  • 1917–1918 Mercury Dime. The Mercury Dime features the iconic image of Lady Liberty with a winged Phrygian cap that makes her look like the Roman god Mercury. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the image was so popular that when the U.S. Mint struck its first Palladium Eagle coin in 2017 it selected Weinman’s design.
  • 2013 Woodrow Wilson Presidential Dollar. Part of the U.S. Mint’s Presidential $1 Coin Program, this release paid tribute to President Woodrow Wilson. When war broke out in 1914, Wilson dug in his heels and kept America neutral until the sinking of several U.S. ships by Germany forced his hand, after which he rallied American support to join the conflict.

The set also includes a United States Postal Service stamp that pays homage to World War I veterans. All five pieces come beautifully displayed in a custom folder with a detailed storycard. These are the coins that our nation’s doughboys carried with them on the fields of France and didn’t come back ’til it was over, over there!
