Most people have had a Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar in their pockets as change at one time or another—but more than 100 years ago these denominations that lined people’s pockets were the Barber type, named after Charles Barber, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 1879 until his death in 1917. First struck in 1892, the coins were the result of more than 300 designs submitted—all of which were rejected by Barber, a member of the deciding panel! Instead, Barber created the designs himself. That’s why Barber doesn’t have just one coin named after him today; he has a whole series!
Denver Mint Struck Among The Fewest Barber Denominations
Struck in the decade from 1906 to 1916, the coins in this three-piece set include a Barber Dime, a Barber Quarter, and a Barber Half-Dollar each struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint. That’s significant because the Denver Mint struck among the fewest Barber denominations with a D mint mark: The Denver Mint struck just 10% of all Barber Dimes, only 13% of all Barber Quarters, and just 12% of all Barber Half Dollars.
