Classic Barber Coinage

Charles Barber doesn’t have just one coin named after him; he has a whole series! Hailed as Barber Coinage, the series encompasses silver dimes, quarters and half-dollars all designed by Barber, who served as the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint from 1879 to his death in 1917. That means that the change rattling around in pockets and coin purses in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century all were the handiwork of Mr. Barber.

The Classic Design of Barber Coinage

Not only was each coin in this series struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, but each featured the same design. The only silver coin of that era that DIDN’T display Barber’s work was the famous Morgan Silver designed by assistant Mint Engraver George Morgan — a fact that kept both designers at arm’s length of each other during their time working together. The Barber coinage all featured a bust of Liberty wearing a triple headdress consisting of a cap, a laurel wreath, and a tiny coronet inscribed with her name. The reverse of both the quarter and half-dollar featured an Eagle and Shield while the dime showed an agricultural wreath and the words “ONE DIME” on its reverse.
