In 1796, the first Dime, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It was the start of something big as this denomination has endured now for more than 225 years. One of the most famous dimes in American history is the Seated Liberty Dime that was struck from 1837-1891. The Seated Liberty Dime was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver at the United States Mint and depicts a goddess-like Lady Liberty seated upon a rock holding a Liberty pole topped by a Phrygian Cap of freedom. Gobrecht’s design showed a wreath on the reverse.
