1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar 3-pc Metals Proof Set
1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar Replicas Struck In Three Metals
Established by Congress in 1792, the first United States Mint building began operations in Philadelphia in 1793. The following year the Mint produced its first silver dollar—the Flowing Hair dollar of 1794-95. According to the official mint report, just 1,758 dollars were struck the first year. In 1795, the U.S. Mint struck 160,295 Flowing Hair Silver Dollars—one of which sold for $10 million dollars in 2013. Here, you can get a limited collector’s version consisting of three recreations of that 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar produced from nickel silver, copper, and golden alloy.
The U.S. Mint’s 1st Chief Engraver
Originally struck way back during the presidency of George Washington, the 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar shows Miss Liberty with wild, flowing hair. It was designed by Robert Scot, the U.S. Mint’s 1st Chief Engraver, and was replaced in late 1795 by the “Draped Bust” design, also designed by Scot. The most prolific engraver of early American patriotic iconography, Scot served as Chief Engraver from 1793 until his death in 1823. Scot was a native of Scotland and changed his last name from Scott to Scot with only one “t” after immigrating to Virginia in 1775. The current Federal seals for the Navy and State Departments, along with the Great Seal of the United States, retain much of the designs from earlier dies originally engraved by Scot.
