11th– 15th Century Jesus Christ 3-pc Coin Set In Box
620-Year-Old Portraits Of Jesus Christ
This is truly an extraordinary set, one rich with history and steeped with religious implications! Three different coins, each featuring a medieval portrait of Jesus Christ, as authorized by emperors in Serbia, Hungary and the Byzantine Empire dating from between the 11th and 15th centuries. You might be able to find one of these coins, maybe two, but finding all three? THAT would be a truly formidable challenge!
Coins That Expected The Return Of Jesus Christ
Emperors of the time expected the imminent return of Jesus Christ, and since they were wary of offending Him, they made sure that His portrait on the coinage was larger and more pronounced then their own. The trend was copied by subsequent Christian states, and as the medieval period gave way to the Renaissance, the designs grew less stylized and more realistic, as on the Hungarian coin, where He is shown as an infant with His mother, Mary.
