A Genuine Artifact Of America’s Free Banking Era

Cochituate, Massachusetts is a small, quaint town located in the Boston metropolitan area. Situated in a picturesque rural area surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills, it’s only about a 30-minute drive west from Fenway Park. Cochituate’s name comes from the Algonquin word for “The Place of Rushing Water.” The community was established around 1848 after a tributary of the Sudbury River was impounded, thus creating Lake Cochituate, which later became the cornerstone of the Boston water system. Not long after the community was established, the Cochituate Bank of Boston was incorporated in 1849 only to fail just a few years later in 1854 due to mismanagement.

Historic $3 Note Comes Graded In Very Good Condition

The Cochituate Bank of Boston may have closed forever more than 170 years ago, but artifacts of its brief existence still remain as evidenced by the artistic bank notes it released during the pre-Civil War “free banking era,” a period in the United States that lasted from 1837 to 1862 when only state-chartered banks existed. During this freewheeling financial era, banks were short-lived and remained open on average for just 5 years with about half of all the banks from that era failing. Here you can secure an 1850s Bank of Cochituate $3 Note graded in nice, Very Good (VG) condition. This historic note features “THREE” printed in red running across the bottom of the note. In the upper left corner is a seated female with an eagle, shield, coins, and a framed oval picture of George Washington. A blacksmith standing by an anvil is in the lower right corner. The back of the note is blank.
