The seeds of America’s involvement in what became the Vietnam War were planted in 1954 following the Vietnamese victory over the French in the First Indochina War. At the close of that war, Vietnam was partitioned into two separate countries: communist North Vietnam and anti-communist South Vietnam. It would take 21 years and more than a million military and civilian deaths later that the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The peak involvement for the United States in the Vietnam War occurred during the 1960s and was played out on television sets each day on the nightly news. But while Americans saw vivid scenes of firefights, smoking villages and terrified civilians, they rarely if ever saw the currency that circulated throughout the Southeast Asian country during the heat of the conflict. This set includes two notes that circulated during the Vietnam War — one from the North and one from the South.

• The first note is a Very Fine (VF) Mot (One) Dong note issued in North Vietnam — what would have been one of the primary notes issued by the Viet Cong during the war. The rustic quality of the paper is a clear sign of the conditions in the North during this time.
• The second half of this set is a Crisp Uncirculated (CU) South Vietnamese 500 Dong note. This is one of the few notes that survived when the South fell to the North in 1975, when most circulating currency was rounded up and destroyed.
