18th Century–1966 Nepali 5 Paisa & 1 Dam Himalayan Yeti 2-pc Set
The Origins Of The Abominable Yeti
In Nepal, the myth of the Yeti is centuries old—and these mysterious creatures continue to capture the imagination today! Commonly referred to as the “Abominable Snowman,” the Yeti is depicted in traditional paintings as a human-like bi-pedal creature with long, shaggy hair. He’s also bigger and stronger than humans, and, like Sasquatch, his North American cousin, he has large feet that leave gigantic footprints in the snows of his home in the Himalayan Mountains.
Coins Provide Clues To Abominable Snowman’s Origins
Here you can secure a two-piece set of Nepali coins that provide clues to the origins of Yeti that dates back to some of our earliest records of Yetis in Nepali art and culture. The first piece is a silver 1 Dam struck sometime in the 1700s. Though it’s undated, the script on the coin references the reigning king. The second coin is a bronze 5 Paisa coin struck during the golden age of Yeti expeditions in Nepal between 1964 and 1966. It comes dated 2021 to 2023 because of the difference in the Nepali and Western calendars. Dates will vary.
The Yeti In Popular Culture
By the 1950s, Yeti hunting became something of an obsession in the West. Expeditions brought back evidence of large footprints in the snow as well as pictures of Yetis depicted in Nepali art, and even a supposed “Yeti scalp” from a monastery in Pangboche. In popular culture, the Yeti has been everywhere from popular cartoon to best-selling novels. Scooby Doo, Shaggy, and the gang tackled the Yeti in a Saturday morning cartoon entitled That’s Snow Ghost that aired on January 17, 1970. Years later, many of the kids who watched that episode of Scooby Doo, Where Are You! probably read author Dan Simmons’ 2013 novel The Abominable about a diverse group of climbers being shadowed by the mythical creature as they ascended Mount Everest. The abominable snowman is even the man villain at the Walt Disney World Resort’s Animal Kingdom attraction Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain where he’s depicted as a vicious, man-eating, bloodthirsty, and aggressive monster that lives on Mount Everest, destroying railways and attacking guests.
