Royal Mint Restores 1663’s Famous Petition Crown!

In 1663—just three years after the English monarchy was restored following more than a decade of Oliver Cromwell’s dictatorial rule as the nation’s Lord Protector—King Charles II called for a new Crown coin to be struck. In a surprising move, he assigned the task to Dutch brothers John and Joseph Roettier, bypassing Thomas Simon, who had faithfully served as the chief engraver at the Royal Mint under Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and, finally, under Charles II. Miffed at the slight, Simon went ahead and designed his own trial Crown—and was it ever a beauty! In addition to its artistically pleasing design that was far superior to the Roettiers’ handiwork, Simon’s coin is famous for its two-line edge inscription, which bore his literal petition to the king:

“THOMAS SIMON MOST HVMBLY PRAYS YOVR MAJESTY TO COMPARE THIS HIS TRYALL PIECE WITH THE DVTCH AND IF MORE TRVLY DRAWN & EMBOSS’D MORE GRACE: FVLLY ORDER’D AND MORE ACCVRATELY ENGRAVEN TO RELEIVE HIM.”

The Fourth Great Engravers Series Release From The Royal Mint

No one knows for sure why Charles chose the Roettiers’ design but choose it he did much to the befuddlement and amazement of coin connoisseurs everywhere. History suggests Charles made his decision as a favor to the Roettier family who provided him with loans while he was exiled in Holland during Cromwell’s reign. Today, more than 350 years later, no more than a dozen of Simon’s original 1663 Petition Crown pattern coins are known to exist with one selling in 2018 for a whopping $649,000! At that price—and with less than 12 specimens known to exist in the world—the odds of you ever acquiring one of these numismatic masterpieces is slim to none! Or it was until now because Great Britain’s Royal Mint has just released the fourth edition of its popular Great Engravers series with coins that feature both the obverse and reverse designs of Simon’s highly praised work. So meticulous were the talented artists at the Royal Mint that they even included the two lines of raised edge lettering!

Here you can secure a two-piece set consisting of coins each struck in two ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. The coins show the famous designs crafted by Thomas Simon in 1663 that depicted King Charles II on his famous “Petition” pattern coin. One coin features the portrait that appeared on the obverse and the other shows the Quartered Arms that appeared on the reverse. The obverse of each of these 2023-dated modern coins features a portrait of another King Charles—the first definitive portrait of King Charles III by designer Martin Jennings.

Flawless Proofs From Among The First Released

Each legal-tender £5 coin comes graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs will have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that each proof available here is a First Releases (FR) coin, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 30 days of issue. Plus, each coin will come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic slab and encapsulated with a special Tower Bridge label.
