Commemorate America’s Freedom With The FIRST-EVER Legal-Tender Libertas Americana Coins!

Leading up to America’s 250th Birthday (2026), The Paris Mint is celebrating more than 250 years of French support for America’s Founding Fathers by issuing a series of legal-tender coins based on historic medals struck by the Paris Mint in Revolutionary times. This 2023 issue, the fourth release, commemorates the Libertas Americana (Freedom of America) Medal, the most famous medal in American History. Designed by Benjamin Franklin and struck in 1783 by the Monnaie de Paris (The Paris Mint), it celebrates our victory in the American Revolution. And now, France and The Paris Mint is striking the legendary medal once again, this time not only in pure silver and gold, but for the first time ever as legal-tender coins!

Impressive High Relief Design Created With The Original Dies

This two-piece set consists of coins struck in two ounces of 99.9% silver and one ounce of 99.9% gold and have French legal-tender values of €25 (Twenty-Five Euros) and €200 (Two Hundred Euros) respectively. Each deftly shows all the magnificent detail you would expect from such a time-honored institution as the Paris Mint. In order to create these remarkable 2023 Libertas Americana Coins, the artisans at the Paris Mint descended into the cavernous vaults below the mint and retrieved the original 1783 dies to create a new die identical to the historical medal. Not only do these coins feature extraordinary high relief designs that tower above their surfaces, but each comes with a unique antique finish that provides even more depth and dimension and makes them resemble the original medal in both look and feel. Antiqued finishes like this are typically applied by hand meaning that no two coins are exactly alike!

Commissioned By Benjamin Franklin To Celebrate American Victories In The Revolutionary War

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin commissioned the Libertas Americana (or “Freedom for America”) Medal to mark the new nation’s victories against the British in the battles of at Saratoga and Yorktown. At the time, Franklin was serving as the United States Minister to France at the court of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, key allies without whose military and naval support against the British, victory may not have been possible. The battles were fought almost exactly four years apart, Saratoga occurring on October 17, 1777 and Yorktown on October 19, 1781. Both dates appear on the coin’s reverse while America’s Independence day of July 4, 1776 appears on the obverse.

Outlined by French artist Esprit-Antoine Gibelin and sculpted by Augustin Dupre, the coin depicts Lady Liberty with her hair flowing in the wind alongside a freedom cap on a pole. The reverse depicts an infant strangling two serpents, a call back to the myth of Hercules that also represents the twin battles of Saratoga and Yorktown. Alongside the child, the goddess Minerva keeps a lion at bay, symbolizing France’s assistance in fighting the British.
