World War I-Era Belgian Silver Francs

The Belgian Silver 1- and 2- Franc coins struck under Albert I were relatively short-lived. The 1-Franc was struck from only 1910 to 1914 and again in 1918, and the 2-Franc was struck from only 1910 to 1912. Two years later, Albert reaffirmed his nation’s neutrality and rejected Germany’s demand that its troops be allowed free passage across Belgian territory. Two days after that, Germany invaded, and by October occupied 90% of the country.

This set contains both a 1-Franc and a 2-Franc coin featuring a portrait of the handsome king who was just 35 when these coins were first struck. Famous for his devotion to his wife, Duchess Elisabeth of Bavaria, Albert formed friendships with some of the country’s most prominent scientists, artists, mathematicians, musicians, and philosophers in his pursuit of human progress and bettering the lives of his nation’s citizens. Each coin here was struck in 83.5% fine silver and comes in nice Very Fine (VF) condition. Dates vary. Following German’s invasion, Albert assumed leadership of the army and remained with his troops throughout the war. After the war ended, he sought to abolish Belgian neutrality, a situation that had been in force due to European treaties dating back to in 1839. He later died in a rock-climbing accident in 1934 just as he was guiding his nation through the Depression of the 1930s and leading his nation’s post-war rebuilding effort.
