2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollar & Jackie Robinson 2-pc Proof Set
Go To Bat With The U.S. Mint’s Historic Negro Leagues Baseball Coin Program
It’s only fitting that in 2022 the United States Mint released its Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program. After all, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced that two of the six people slated to be inducted into its hallowed roster in 2022 were from the old Negro Leagues: Buck O’Neil and Bud Fowler. O’Neil was a former Negro Leagues player and manager who was also the first Black coach in Major League history and helped create the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Fowler became the earliest known African-American player in professional baseball when he suited up for an all-white professional team based out of New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1872. To celebrate these men and all the other pioneers in equality, the United States Mint has released a series of clad, silver and gold commemorative coins that pay tribute to the legacy of the old Negro Baseball Leagues.
Designs Recall Baseball Action In The Negro Leagues
In this offer you can get the Silver-Dollar in gleaming Proof condition that was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. Struck in 26.72 grams of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, it features a pair of remarkable designs. The coin’s obverse features a pitcher in mid-throw with the baseball in the foreground and baseball stitching as a border. The reverse design carries the action over from the obverse by showing a batter with his eyes on the ball along with a catcher and an umpire waiting for the ball to reach home plate.
Special Jackie Robinson Silver Medal
In this offer you will also receive a special Jackie Robinson Silver Medal. The Jackie Robinson silver medal carries the same design as the Jackie Robinson Congressional Gold Medal issued by the U.S. Mint in 2003, which honored Robinson as a baseball great, civil rights leader, and political activist. Like the silver dollar, it was struck in 26.72 grams of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. It features a portrait of Jackie Robinson with inscriptions that read “JACKIE ROBINSON,” “A LIFETIME OF ADVOCACY FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE & HUMAN DIGNITY,” and “ACT OF CONGRESS 2003.” The medal’s reverse shows laurel branches surrounding a plaque containing the inscriptions “A LIFE IS NOT IMPORTANT EXCEPT IN THE IMPACT IT HAS ON OTHER LIVES,” and “JACKIE ROBINSON.”
