This two-piece set consists of BOTH the Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated versions of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Silver Dollar each struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver. These coins were released by The Mint on February 12, 2009—Lincoln’s 200th birthday—to the tune of 450,000 Uncirculated coins and 50,000 Proofs. The Uncirculated coins sold out within two months and the Proofs, which had been held back for inclusion in The Mint’s Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set, sold out in less than two days after their release on October 15, 2009.

Inspiring Designs Pay Tribute To America’s 16th President

These 2009 one-year-only Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollars minted to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday are beautiful pieces of work! Each features a striking portrait of “Honest Abe” and one of the verses from his Gettysburg Address. The obverse designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart shows a portrait of the president based on the colossal statue of the former president that sits inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The coin’s reverse was designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill and features an engraving of the first 43 words in Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address encircled by a laurel wreath. It reads, “WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE THAT THESE DEAD SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN — THAT THIS NATION, UNDER GOD, SHALL HAVE A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM — AND THAT GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH.”
