1979 Susan B. Anthony Dollar Wide & Narrow Rim 2-pc Set AU–BU
Story of Two Susan B. Anthony Dollars
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar, America’s first small-sized dollar coin and the first circulating coin to feature an identifiable woman, was introduced in 1979 to replace the dollar bill. Late in 1979, the border of the coin was redesigned and widened to provide a better appearance. Therefore, for 1979, two designs were issued. One is the “Narrow Rim” variety, the norm for 1979 dollars. The second variety is the scarcer of the two and is referred to as the “Wide Rim” variety. It usually commands a significant premium. Here you can get both of these 40-year-old designs in one incredible two-piece set!
The Nation’s Shortest-Lived Coin Series
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar remains a significant coin in United States history. The prevailing theory is that it was too close in size to a U.S. quarter. A situation that caused confusion at cash registers and resulted in an overall rejection of the coin by people across the country who didn’t accept it as their new currency. Perhaps in response to the public’s disdain for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the U.S. Mint struck if for only three years from 1979 to 1981 and then for one final time in 1999 in anticipation for public demand leading up to the release of the Sacagawea Dollar in 2000. All told, it ended by being the nation’s shortest-lived coin series.
