1964–1992 Kennedy Half Dollar Silver Proof 2-pc Set
A Pair Of Silver Kennedy Half Dollars Struck 28 Years Apart
You don’t often see a Kennedy Half Dollar in circulation these days. Even so, it remains one of the most popular and recognizable coins of the last half century. It was struck in 1964 mere months after the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Intended as a one-year-only commemorative struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, it proved to be so popular that it replaced the Franklin Half Dollar and has been the image of America’s Half-Dollar coin ever since! Subsequent releases, however, were not struck in 90% silver making the original, first-year-of issue 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar a singular coin coveted by collectors everywhere.
Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Returns After A 28-Year Hiatus
But 28 years later the U.S. Mint put the silver back in the Kennedy Half Dollar thanks to a special occasion. Struck at the fabulous San Francisco Mint, the 1992-S Kennedy Half-Dollar was part of the United States Mint’s 1992 Silver Proof Set—the Mint’s first proof set with the cupronickel denominations (dime, quarter, and half dollar) replaced by coins struck in highly pure 90% fine silver! This special all-silver proof set was released to mark the 200th anniversary of the mint’s establishment in 1792.

Many 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars were melted down in the 1980s when the price of silver skyrocketed, making them more difficult to find. COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- FIRST-YEAR KENNEDY HALF-DOLLAR – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ bust of President John F. Kennedy, the 1964 Kennedy Half-Dollar was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.
- SPECIAL 1992 KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR – Featuring the same design as the original 1964 half dollar, the 1992-S Kennedy Half Dollar was struck by the San Francisco Mint and was part of a special U.S. Mint Proof Set that marked the bicentennial of the Mint’s establishment in 1792.
- STRUCK IN HIGHLY PURE SILVER – These Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in highly pure 90% fine silver.
- LARGE LEGAL-TENDER COINS – Each large, 30.6 mm coin is 50 cents legal tender in the United States.
- GORGEOUS PROOF CONDITION – Each coin in your 1964–1992 Kennedy Half Dollar Silver Proof Two-Piece Set will come in gorgeous Proof condition with frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
