A Set That’s Sure To Earn Your “Seal” Of Approval!

If you pull a $5 bill out of your pocket, you’ll see that the Treasury seal on the front is printed in green. But that wasn’t always the case. Before 1963, the $5 notes in our pockets might have had two more colors: red and blue. This two-piece set has an example of both the red and blue $5 notes issued in 1953.

  • 1953 $5 LEGAL TENDER RED SEAL CURRENCY NOTE – Red Seal Notes, also called Legal Tender Notes, are one of America’s longest-lived paper currency notes with a history that dates back to their introduction in the United States during the Civil War. In the history of the United States, only three dates of $5 small-sized notes were circulated with bright red seals and serial numbers 1928, 1953, and 1963. First issued more than 90 years ago, these notes were heavily circulated, and then most were redeemed and destroyed. Included in this two-piece set is the $5 Legal Tender Red Seal Currency Note, its stark red seal still plainly visible beside the familiar portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the front and a highly-detailed image of the Lincoln Memorial on the back.
  • 1953 $5 SILVER CERTIFICATE BLUE SEAL NOTE – Blue Seal Silver Certificates were first issued in the 19th century and were redeemable for Morgan and Peace Dollars. 1953 was the last year that the United States printed $5 Silver Certificates. Silver Certificates were once redeemable for silver on demand! If you took this note to the bank back then, you could have redeemed it for five silver dollars! In fact, you could have exchanged this note for its face value in silver up until 1968. They were still—and remain—legal tender, but nowadays you won’t get silver in return. Thanks to the Silver Act of 1963 that ended traditional silver currency notes, whenever these beautiful notes were exchanged, however, most were quickly destroyed by the government. You’ll love perusing the fine print on this note that reads: “This Certifies That There Is On Deposit In The Treasury Of The United States Of America Five Dollars In Silver Payable To The Bearer On Demand.”

Since both notes in this two-piece set were heavily used in commerce—with many redeemed and destroyed—finding them today can be a challenge. That’s especially true for this pair in sought-after, difficult-to-find, About Uncirculated (AU) condition. Secure yours now!
