First and Last Franklin Half Dollar Set

The Franklin Half Dollar was first unveiled to the public in 1948, replacing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It enjoyed a popular run until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Just a few months later in 1964, the U.S. Mint replaced the Franklin with a new half dollar honoring the fallen president. Had JFK not been killed, this might still be the Half Dollar found in our Mint and Proof Sets! This two-coin set brings together the first and final dates of the Franklin Half Dollar series in Extremely Fine (XF) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, respectively. Each set also comes beautifully housed in a deluxe presentation case. An important “first and last” set!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • FIRST AND LAST YEARS OF THE FRANKLIN HALF DOLLAR – This set contains the first and last years of Franklin Half Dollars — the 1948 and 1963 issues.
  • SHORT-LIVED HALF DOLLAR SERIES – The Franklin Half Dollar was issued from only 1948 to 1963, making it one of the shortest-lived series of the 20th century.
  • BELOVED COIN DESIGNS – With an obverse portrait of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin designed by John R. Sinnock and a Liberty Bell reverse designed by Gilroy Roberts, the eighth and ninth Chief Engravers of the U.S. Mint respectively, the Franklin Half Dollar is an exquisitely designed coin that is popular among collectors.
  • STRUCK IN HIGHLY PURE SILVER – Franklin Half Dollars were struck in 12.5 grams of 90% fine silver and measure 30.6 mm in diameter.
  • FINE TO VERY FINE CONDITION – The coins in your 1948 & 1963 Franklin Silver Half Dollar First & Last Two-Piece Set will come in Extremely Fine (XF) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, respectively.
  • UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – Despite not being issued in more than half a century, Franklin Half dollars are still accepted as legal tender, though their collector value far exceeds their 50 cents legal-tender denomination.
