1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar with FS-101 Doubling Variety

The 1925-P Stone Mountain Commemorative Silver Half Dollar features Civil War Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson exactly as they appear on the landmark Stone Mountain Civil War Memorial near Atlanta, Georgia — a monument designed by famed sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who would go on to create the magnificent Mount Rushmore. The very first coin issued by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the Civil War, funds raised form its sale contributed to the work on the memorial, the largest bas relief sculpture in the world!

High Grade Stone Mountain Commemorative Paired with a Unique Die Variety

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1925, many of these 90% silver coins circulated well not the Great Depression years of the 1930s or were melted down, making it difficult for today’s collectors to find it high grades. But what we have here is even better — a single Stone Mountain Half Dollar graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 MS64 condition, paired with a second Stone Mountain Half Dollar featuring the FS-101 designated variety, wherein the words “Stone Mountain” are doubled that has been graded by PCGS in Gem Uncirculated MS65 condition!

The “FS” designation comes from the book, the Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties, written by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton. It is considered to be the Bible of rare die varieties. According to the PCGS and the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), only 208 of these coins have been designated FS-101. Each set will come with a coin magnifier, so you’ll be able to see the unique doubling up close.
