1917-S Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar Obverse-Reverse Mintmark 2-pc Set G–VG
Second-Year Walking Liberty Half Dollar Obverse/Reverse Mint Mark Set
Since the mid-19th century, it’s been customary to put mint marks — the tiny letter denoting a coin’s mint of origin — on the reverse of the coin. However, in 1917 something strange happened. For the second year of the 90% fine Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar, coins struck in San Francisco had “S” mint marks on the obverse! This change didn’t last long, however, and soon the mint mark returned to the reverse — creating relatively tiny populations for collectors to hunt down. Which we’ve done for you, bringing together a two-piece set that features both versions from the San Francisco Mint. Each coin comes in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition.
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN DESIGNS – Featuring Adolph A. Weinman’s classic design of “Walking Liberty,” this half-dollar is hailed as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck. It’s so revered that when the U.S. Mint introduced its American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986 it used Weinman’s iconic design!
- SELDOM-SEEN OBVERSE/REVERSE MINTMARK COINS—This set of 1917-Sated Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollars features two coins from San Francisco Mint — one with the mint mark on the obverse and the other with the mint mark on o the reverse
- KEY-DATE YEAR STRUCK AT THE SAN FRANCISCO MINT – These coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1917 — the first year of America’s involvement in World War II and the second year of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Series.
