Teddy Roosevelt 1909 African Safari Quarter Set
You might have a Washington Quarter in your pocket right now. But more than 110 years ago, people would have had one of these Barber Quarters in their pocket. And if your travel all the way back to 1909 you’ll discover that it was the year former President Teddy Roosevelt ventured to Eastern Africa on behalf of the Smithsonian® in an expedition that garnered the Institute approximately 11,400 animal specimens and more than 10,000 plant specimens — a massive scientific haul that took 8 years to fully catalog!
Fabulous Barber Quarters From A Small Hoard
The quarters we have here not only pre-date the Washington Quarter, but were also struck before the Standing Liberty Quarter. They were designed by Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, and we part of the famous Barber Coin age series that featured the same portrait of Lady Liberty on the dime, quarter and half dollar. The design shows Miss Liberty wearing a crown made of olive branches with a small headband inscribed with the word LIBERTY. They all come from a small hoard out which we were able to assemble 1,100 sets.
Two-Piece Set From The Year Teddy Roosevelt Explored Africa
Each Barber Quarter was struck in 90% fine silver, and in this fabulous set you’ll get one from the Philadelphia Mint and one from the Denver Mint. Plus, each comes in nice circulated Good (G) condition and encapsulated in a custom-designed 3" x 5" storycard holder that provides information on Teddy Roosevelt’s famous 1909 African expedition.
