Be Gone “Atrocious Hideousness”

In 1904, President Teddy Roosevelt penned a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury that stated, “I think our coinage is artistically of atrocious hideousness. Would it be possible…to give us a coinage that would have some beauty?” Through Roosevelt’s insistence, coin designs of the 20th century became classics and are now among the most collected.

Two-Piece Sets Features Two Sides To Roosevelt’s Argument

This two-piece set features a 1904-P Barber Half Dollar, a stodgy design struck the year Roosevelt sent the letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, and a 1916-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar, featuring the much-acclaimed design by Adolph A. Weinman depicting Miss Liberty walking toward the sun, striding eastward toward war-torn Europe.

  • ABOUT THE BARBER HALF DOLLAR: More than 100 years ago, it wasn’t the Kennedy Half Dollar but the Barber Half Dollar that folks had rattling around in their pockets and coin purses. Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, these coins were designed by Charles Barber, then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Other designs had been submitted—more than 300, in fact—but Barber, as part of a panel of judges, rejected them all in favor of designing the coin himself. The coin features a bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a Heraldic Eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States and the “HALF DOLLAR” denomination.
  • ABOUT THE WALKING LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR: The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is one of the most beloved coins in Twentieth-Century American coinage. Debuting in 1916, the silver half dollar was struck through 1947, the silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar being one of the final issues that was part of this “Renaissance of American coinage” put into motion by President Theodore Roosevelt. Like the Barber Half Dollars, this coin was struck in highly pure 90% fine silver. Considered by many to feature America’s most beautiful coin design, Weinman’s design has graces the American Silver Eagle Dollar, the best-selling coin on the planet.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • CLASSIC BARBER HALF DOLLAR – The Barber Half Dollar was struck from 1892 to 1915. The classic design was the work of Charles Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver. It features Lady Liberty with her hair tucked up under her cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a heraldic eagle based on the Great Seal of the United States and the denomination.
  • POPULAR WALKING LIBERTY DESIGN – Featuring Adolph A. Weinman’s classic design of “Walking Liberty,” the half-dollar coin issued from 1916-1947 is hailed as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck. It’s so revered that when the U.S. Mint introduced its American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986 it used Weinman’s iconic design!
