The Dedication Of Grant’s Tomb
These 125-year-old coins—a silver dime and silver half dollar—could have lined the pockets of those that attended the opening of the Grant’s Tomb. The largest mausoleum in North America, Grant’s Tomb was dedicated on April 27,1897 on the 75th anniversary ceremony of Grant’s birth. His remains had been transferred there 10 days earlier. The ceremony was attended one million people, including President William McKinley. You can still visit Grant’s Tomb, where both Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant, are interred—though no more than 10 visitors are allowed inside the mausoleum at any one time.
Iconic Coins Designed By Charles E, Barber
Struck in highly pure fine silver, these coins were designed by Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The Barber Dime was struck from 1892 to 1916. The classic design features Lady Liberty with her hair tucked up under her cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a wreath and the ONE DIME denomination. The Barber Half Dollar was struck from 1892 to 1915 and features the same design of Lady Liberty. The reverse was different, however, featuring a Heraldic Eagle, based on the Great Seal of the United States. Barber Dimes were struck in 2.5 grams of 90% silver and measure 17.9 mm in diameter. Barber Half Dollars were struck in 12.5 grams of 90% silver and measure 30.6 mm in diameter
