Here Are Your Seated Liberty Half Dollars!
The Seated Liberty Half Dollar was one of the most popular—and used—coins of the 19th century. During the mid-to-late 1800s, “change coins” like these were desperately needed for day-to-day transactions where the combined face value of two coins equaled $1, a sum required to complete for many purchases at that time. That’s why vast numbers of Seated Liberty Half Dollars were often worn out in circulation. With this two-piece set of vintage Liberty Half Dollars, you can hold in your hands the coins that facilitated American commerce before, during, and after the Civil War and on through nearly the Turn of the Century.
The Workhorse Of The 19th Century
The Seated Liberty Half-Dollar was first struck in 1839 and circulated throughout much of the 19th-century until it was replaced by the Barber Half Dollar in 1891, a majestic run of 52 years! Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, the Seated Liberty features a design that coin experts have hailed as one of the great classic designs of the time—so much so that it appeared on five other coins between 1837 and 1891!
Gobrecht’s Famous Seated Liberty Design
America’s famous Seated Liberty Half Dollar was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. It was called a “Seated Liberty” due to the design of Lady Liberty seated on a rock and holding a Liberty Cap. The coin’s reverse depicts an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. This design proved to be so durable and popular that it continued to be struck long after Gobrecht had passed away, firmly establishing Gobrecht’s legacy as one of the most renowned engravers in American history. Among his fans were Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was certainly a big feather in Gobrecht’s posthumous hat!
