America’s Pocket Change in the 19th Century

These silver coins were among the most heavily used coins throughout most of 19th Century America. At times, when the United States Mint wasn’t striking silver Dollars, these half-dollars were the largest silver coins in circulation at a time when the nation desperately needed coins to keep the economy moving. The coins are the Capped Bust Half Dollar issued from 1807 to 1839 and the4 Seated Liberty Half Dollar struck from 1839 to 1891.

  • John Reich’s Timeless Capped-Bust Design. Known as the “Capped Bust” silver half-dollar, these coins feature a portrait of Miss Liberty wearing a small Phrygian cap inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The coin’s reverse features a shield-chested eagle with its wings spread, holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Designed by German immigrant John Reich, the capped-head design of Lady Liberty proved to be so popular that it was used on four different coin denominations. Besides being used on the half dollar from 1807-1839, it was the design for the quarter from 1815-1838, the dime from 1809-1837, and the half-dime from 1829-1837. This beauty is a real classic U.S. type coin that comes in an eye-appealing collectible grade. Each was struck in 89.24% silver and comes in Very Good to Fine (VG–F) condition with lots of nice detail.
  • Gobrecht’s Famous Seated Liberty Design. In this offer you’ll get Gobrecht’s famous Seated Liberty Half Dollar that was struck for more than a half century from 1839 to 1891 in highly pure 90% fine silver. It was called a “Seated Liberty” due to the design of Lady Liberty seated on a rock and holding a Liberty Cap. The coin’s reverse depicts an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. This design proved to be so durable and popular that it continued to be struck long after Gobrecht had passed away, firmly establishing Gobrecht’s legacy as one of the most renowned engravers in American history. Among his fans were Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was certainly a big feather in Gobrecht’s posthumous hat! Now this coin can be yours with each coin available in this offer coming in nice Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition.
