Scarce George Washington Funeral Medals

If you’re the sort of collector that likes to hold American history in your hands — well, it doesn’t get much more historic than these medals.

On December 14, 1799, President George Washington — our very first president, and the man known as the “Father of His Country” for his leadership during the American Revolution — closed his eyes for the final time and passed away. News of his passing spread quickly, and the entire nation came to a halt to mourn the passing of an American hero.

The Famous Washington “Funeral Urn” Medal

Over the course of the following two months, funeral parades were held in Washington’s honor. At those parades, special Funeral Medals were handed out to those in attendance. The obverse features a bust of Washington and the words “HE IS IN GLORY. THE WORLD IN TEARS.” The reverse depicts a funeral urn along with important dates of Washington’s life. At the top, a hole has been punched into the medal so it could be hung from the attendee’s neck. This phenomenal piece even ranks at No. #11 in the 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens written by Katherine Jaeger & David Q. Bowers

Struck in white metal, this piece is one of just 35 to 70 that are believed to have survived. Few are ever seen. Ironically, it is often the passing of a collector that leads to one of the pieces appearing on the coin market. But we’ve managed to secure a monster of a piece — one certified and graded by the professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Choice Uncirculated in Mint State-63 (MS63) condition. PCGS has graded only one piece in higher condition!

Scarce “Birth & Death” Washington Medal

In addition, you’ll also receive a second Washington medal, struck in 1859 on the 60th anniversary of Washington’s death with dates of his birth and death. Also struck in white metal, this piece is one of just 32 graded examples known and comes certified and graded by PCGS as being in Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62) condition. The medal’s portrait of Washington is very similar to that which appears on today’s quarter with the exception that Washington is facing right instead of left and he has a bit more hair in the ponytail at the nape of his neck. Both designs were based on French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon’s 1786 bust of Washington later hailed by his relatives as the best representation of Washington’s face they had ever seen.

These are true pieces of American history that you can hold in your hands. They’re sure to become a prized family heirloom for generations to come — but only if you act now! Secure it to your cart now to avoid disappointment later!
