Less Than 10 of These Alexander the Great Silver Tetradrachms from Arados Still Exist!

After Alexander the Great conquered most the known world, cities in his empire began to strike large silver tetradrachms in his honor. Some were struck in his lifetime, but the same design was used to strike coins for hundreds of years after his death. This Alexander III Silver Tetradrachm was struck between 206 and 205 BC at Arados, an island city just off the coast of Syria.

The obverse of this Alexander III Silver Tetradrachm shows the head of Hercules wearing a lion skin headdress and facing to the right. The reverse features Zeus enthroned, facing left and holding an eagle and a scepter with a palm tree in the left field. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) grades this coin Choice Extremely Fine (CH XF) with further designations grading the coin's strike as 5 out of 5 and its surfaces as 3 out of 5.

Fewer than 10 of these Alexander III Silver Tetradrachms are known to exist. Of them all, this particular silver tetradrachm is among those with the best condition. In a search of all of the over 1,750 major ancient coin auctions of the past 16 years, only two other coins of this type have been sold. Secure this coin for your collection now!
