Designed by legendary former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, these coins showcase his signature artistry, which has earned worldwide acclaim in the numismatic community.
Originally submitted by Mercanti as a reverse idea for the 2004-2005 Westward Journey nickel series while he was still a designer/engraver at the U.S. Mint, this handsome design was ultimately not selected for the program. When Mercanti left the U.S. Mint, he was allowed to take home his favorite and most iconic un-used works with him – WHICH INCLUDED THIS INCREDIBLE DESIGN! This practice is no longer allowed by the U.S. Mint when designers/engravers leave their post, so this new series not only offers a glimpse inside the Mint’s Westward Journey program, but it also captures a bygone era at the U.S. Mint.
And now for the first time, Mercanti’s handsome Native American design has been made available to the public—providing an exciting chance to own one of his most incredible creations. And if that wasn’t enough – and it should be! – Mercanti also crafted a modern depiction of James Earle Fraser’s famous U.S. Mint “Black Diamond” Buffalo nickel design for the reverse side.
