The Greatest Generation—a Generation of Heroes!
Perfect 2024 Commemorative Coins Honoring the Brave Sacrifices of
American Heroes, Soldiers and Civilians During World War II!

Not All Heroes Wear Capes
This U.S. Mint program honors the bravery, service, and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during World War II—ordinary citizens who answered the call in the fight against tyranny. By the war’s end, 16 million people had served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and more than 400,000 gave their lives. Along with those heroes, many civilians across America made significant sacrifices to support the brave people who served. They joined the workforce despite their own family obligations, they planted victory gardens even if they would not enjoy the fruits of their labor, and they rationed their food so that those on the frontline could have enough to eat. This generation was a generation of heroes not hesitant to make needed sacrifices.

U.S. Mint Commemorates Legacy Of Greatest Generation
As eloquently described by journalist Tom Brokaw in his book The Greatest Generation, the Americans born during the Roaring ’20s grew up during the Depression-era ’30s, served in World War II, and then led the U.S. through the post-war boom—earning the Greatest Generation tag through hard work, determination, and perseverance. To honor this generation and inspire future generations of Americans, Congress authorized construction of the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Now, on the 20th anniversary of its opening, the U.S. Mint is striking a series of commemorative coins that both honor the memorial and pay tribute to the legacy of the Greatest Generation.

Benefitting the National World War II Memorial
The 2024 Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Program honors the service and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during World War II. Part of the program includes a surcharge raised from sales of the coins that the U.S. Mint sends directly to the Friends of the National World War II Memorial to support the National Park Service in maintaining the site and funding educational programs. The National World War II Memorial opened to the public on April 29, 2004 and honors the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the 16 million people who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the war—and all who supported the war effort on the home front.

Specifically—the Gold Coin Designs Pay Tribute To Fallen Service Members

The design on the gold coin features a section of the Wall of Stars at the World War II Memorial with an olive branch. Each star on the wall represents 100 Americans who lost their lives in the war, and the olive branch represents the peace that followed thanks to their sacrifice. The inscription, “WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL,” scrolls across the bottom of the design. The reverse design shows a folded American flag, such as one that would be presented at the funeral of a fallen service member. Inscriptions include “WWII MEMORIAL” and “TO UNITE THE GENERATIONS OF TOMORROW.”

Specifically—the Silver Dollar Designs Represent Victory Achieved Through Cooperation

The obverse design on this silver coin created by artist Beth Zaiken features six people each representing a different branch of America’s military from World War II—the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, and Merchant Marine—working together in a spirit of cooperation to support the Earth. Inscriptions include “1941–1945,” “WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL,” and “DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM.” The coin’s reverse design shows a view from inside a Victory Pavilion in the World War II Memorial. The sculpture depicts four eagles holding a laurel wreath. At the center of the wreath is a globe with a view of the Pacific Ocean. Inscriptions include, “VICTORY,” “IN THE AIR,” “AT SEA,” “ON LAND,” and “WWII MEMORIAL.”

Specifically—Half Dollar Designs Honor Those Who Answered The Call During WWII

The design on this clad coin features a modernized image of the nation’s Victory Medal that was awarded to all who served in America’s Armed Forces during World War II. The figure of Liberation stands with open arms holding two halves of a broken sword, symbolizing the war’s conclusion. It also features inscriptions that read, “WORLD WAR II” and “WE ANSWERED THE CALL.” The coin’s reverse design depicts the World War II Memorial from the point of view of a person walking up a ramp leading to one of the towers.

Flawless with a First Day of Issue Designation
For any collectible coin, collectors seek out the finest quality available. That’s what you have here. Each of these 2024 Greatest Generation coins is certified in perfect Mint State-70 (MS70) or perfect Proof-70 (PF70) condition by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC).

Each coin has also been designated as First Day of Issue (FDI)—which means the coin was purchased within one day of the first day the mint made it available for sale. FDI coins are sought-after because they are fresh and sharp, minted using newer dies, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.

BUT There’s More—Hand-Signed Signature Labels
Each coin will arrive sealed by NGC in a display holder featuring a label bearing the hand-signed signature of your choice: Beth Zaiken, the obverse designer of the $1 coin and an award-winning museum artist and designer who designed both sides of the 2024 Harriet Tubman commemorative silver dollar; or AMS ambassador and the former 34th (1992-1993, under George W. Bush) and 39th (2018-2021, under Donald J. Trump) Director of the U.S. Mint, David J. Ryder, who in 2021 was named one of Coin World’s “Most Influential People in Numismatics”.
