2024 Alderney £1 1-oz Silver 80th Anniversary of D-Day Coin BU
D-Day: The Greatest Amphibious Invasion In Military History
The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, is recognized as the greatest amphibious invasion in military history. Under the codename OVERLORD, the operation sent five naval assault divisions to the French coast of Normandy, piercing Nazi Leader Adolf Hitler’s vaunted “Fortress Europe” and setting the stage for the liberation of Europe and victory over Nazi Germany. Though Alderney, a British Crown Dependency and the northernmost of the inhabited Channel Islands, was not fully liberated until after Germany surrendered, D-Day marked the beginning of the end of Nazi occupation. To pay tribute to the 80th anniversary of the historic World War II-era battle, Alderney has released this incredible silver bullion coin that shows the aftermath of victory.
Stirring Commemorative Pays Tribute To The Soldiers, Sailors, And Airmen Of D-Day
Featuring a long line of Allied soldiers marching past a row of metal beach obstacles known as Czech hedgehogs, this stirring commemorative coin pays tribute to the thousands of soldiers, sailors, and airmen who put their lives on the line that fateful day. The way the coin is designed makes the hedgehogs look like tiny crosses that pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to bring freedom and justice to a world in the grip of tyranny. This silver dollar-sized legal-tender £1 (one pound) coin was struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. It also comes in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor-sharp images that are clean and crystal clear.
Alderney During World War II
The Channel Islands were the only British territory occupied by the Germans during World War II, and Alderney was the only one evacuated by the British government. After the Germans took control of Alderney, they built four concentration camps there where experts believe anywhere from 400 to several thousand people died during the course of the occupation. Despite Germany’s surrender on May 8, 1945 (V-E Day), Alderney was not handed over until May 16, 1945—and even then, the people of Alderney could not immediately return to their island due to the huge clean-up operation needed which included the removal of more than 30,000 landmines.
