The Colorful Face Of Egypt’s Famous Boy King

One of the most famous events in all of archeology was the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 by English archaeologist Howard Carter. The tomb itself was not opened until 1923 and it was another two years before Carter and his team were able to open the heavy sarcophagus containing Tutankhamun’s mummy. Like a Russian Matryoshka nesting doll, the sarcophagus contained three inner coffins and upon finally opening the innermost one, Carter was left speechless at the sight before him: the golden death mask of the boy king! At more than 20 inches long and weighing 22 pounds, the 23-karat gold mask along is vivid likeness of the boy known today simply as “King Tut.” Now, a century later, you can gaze on this artifact thanks to this amazing coin that shows the mask in every detail.

Pyramid-Shaped Coin Celebrates Discovery Of King Tutankhamun’s Tomb

This $10 Sierra Leone legal-tender commemorative coin from the Pobjoy Mint is struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. Not only was it struck as a pyramid-shaped coin, but it has been selectively colorized to bring out every nuance of the Boy King’s face as it appears on his famous mask. This large, 56.2 mm x 40.7 mm coin also comes in gorgeous Proof condition, meaning it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. The gleaming Proof details show off every design element from the golden Death Mask depicted on the reverse to the intricate hieroglyphics that decorate both sides of the coin.

The Curse Of King Tut’s Tomb?

King Tut was a mere nine years old when he became Pharoah, and he reigned for ten years, dying at age 19. Though many suspected foul play and others speculated the boy king’s death was an accident, scientists recently used digital imaging and DNA testing to suggest that his death was likely caused by malaria or an infection of some kind. More than 3,000 years later, his largely intact tomb was discovered and along with it came the so-called Curse of the Pharaohs which said that whosoever disturbed the remains of the pharaohs would suffer bad luck, illness, and death.

Is the curse real? For many of Howard Carter’s band of adventurers it was. Shortly after unearthing King Tut’s tomb, Carter’s financial backer, Lord Carnarvon, was found dead, the victim of blood poisoning caused by a mosquito bite. And he would not be the only death, illness or unlucky occurrence associated with this expedition. Carnarvon’s half-brother also died from blood poisoning, Sir Archibald Douglas-Reid died from a mysterious illness, and George Jay Gould died from a fever following his visit to Egypt, among many others. Objects from the tomb were given as gifts to Carter’s friend Sir Bruce Ingram, whose house burned down not long after. After being rebuilt, the house then flooded.
