Travel Back In Time To The Incan Empire With This Interactive Maze Coin

The ruins of the Coricancha Temple near Santo Domingo Plaza in Cusco, Peru represent the zenith of the ancient Incan Empire. It was there that the Incans worshipped the great sun god Inti amid the splendor of the temple’s golden walls. In fact, the word “Coricancha” is formed through a combination of two Incan words: “quri,” which means “worked gold” in English, and “kancha,” which means “temple,” or “place enclosed by walls.” Put the two together and you have a word that literally means “Walls of Gold.” There wasn’t much gold left after Spanish conquistadores arrived in the 15th Century, however. In the war that followed, most of the temple was destroyed and the gold was appropriated for the Spanish crown. The beauty of the Incan Empire can still be seen in its tattered remnants, and here you can catch a glimpse of the Incans’ glorious past with a coin that salutes the great temple that was hailed as “The House of the Sun.”

The Incan Temple That Puzzled The Conquistadores

On first encounter, the House of the Sun must have seemed like a maze to the Spaniards. Its rectangular enclosure featured a row of doors on one side and niches in the interior. A gabled roof covered the temple and was supported by walls and rows of columns in the building’s interior. Carved into the walls were seats, caves, small windows, elaborate drainage nets, and shrines containing isolated stone monoliths. In addition, the temple’s construction was adapted to the area’s natural topography and resulted in instances of curved walls. This coin, struck in one-and-a-half ounces of highly pure 99.99% silver, reflects that “puzzle” and features an interactive maze with a gold-plated ball that you can actually maneuver through the numismatic labyrinth to a golden center.

Another design element you’ll notice is a gold-plated llama. At the height of their power, the Incans did everything they could to not run afoul of Inti, their greatest and most powerful god. If properly worshiped, Inti could be a benevolent god. If not, well, let’s just say that an easily angered god is not a deity you wanted to deal with! To avoid Inti’s wrath, the Incans sacrificed llamas in elaborate ceremonies held in the Coricancha Temple.
