2022 Sierra Leone $1 29-gm Goldclad Bronze King Tut Pyramid-Shaped Coin
Marking 100 Years Since The Discovery Of King Tut’s Tomb—A Pyramid Coin
You may know that this year is the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamun by famous archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. When Carter’s discovery, including more than 5,000 amazing artifacts, became known, public interest in Ancient Egypt grew. Tutankhamun became known as “King Tut,” and his golden mask became one of the most popular and enduring symbols of Ancient Egypt.
Pyramid-Shaped Coin Celebrates Discovery Of King Tutankhamun’s Tomb
This $1 Sierra Leone legal-tender commemorative coin was struck by the Pobjoy Mint—Europe’s largest, oldest, and most prestigious private mint—in 29 grams of Goldclad® bronze. This large, 56.2 mm x 40.7 mm coin also comes in original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor sharp details that show every design element from the selectively colorized golden Death Mask depicted on the reverse to the intricate hieroglyphics that decorate both sides of the coin.
The Curse Of King Tut’s Tomb?
King Tut was a mere nine years old when he became Pharoah, and he reigned for ten years, dying at age 19. Though many suspected foul play and others speculated the boy king’s death was an accident, scientists recently used digital imaging and DNA testing to suggest that his death was likely caused by malaria or an infection of some kind. More than 3,000 years later, his largely intact tomb was discovered and along with it came the so-called Curse of the Pharaohs which said that whosoever disturbed the remains of the pharaohs would suffer bad luck, illness, and death.
Is the curse real? For many of Howard Carter’s band of adventures it was. Shortly after unearthing King Tut’s tomb, Carter’s financial backer, Lord Carnarvon, was found dead, the victim of blood poisoning caused by a mosquito bite. And he would not be the only death, illness or unlucky occurrence associated with this expedition. Carnarvon’s half-brother also died from blood poisoning, Sir Archibald Douglas-Reid died from a mysterious illness, and George Jay Gould died from a fever following his visit to Egypt, among many others. Objects from the tomb were given as gifts to Carter’s friend Sir Bruce Ingram, whose house burned down not long after. After being rebuilt, the house then flooded.
