In addition to the one-year-only designs, this series features a new obverse design by American sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser features a portrait of George Washington facing right, surrounded by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” AND “2022.” Fraser originally created this design in 1931 as her entry in the competition for the 1932 Washington Quarter that was struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. Her design was recommended by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, but John Flannigan’s left facing Washington design was ultimately selected. Fraser’s obverse design was later used in 1999 on the George Washington Commemorative Gold $5 Coin.
