2022 Mercanti Double Eagle 2-oz Silver High Relief Reverse Proof NGC PF70 First Day of Issue w/Black Core & Mercanti-Signed Flag Label
The Biggest “What If?” In Recent U.S. Mint History!
Everyone knows that John Mercanti is the designer of the “Heraldic Eagle” design that graced the reverse of the American Silver Eagle from 1986 until it was replaced in 2021. For many collectors, the excitement of a brand new design was tempered by the loss of Mercanti’s iconic image that had graced the coin for 35 years. But what if instead of removing Mercanti’s design, the U.S. Mint had Mercanti create a new design? And what if the Mint further asked the legendary coin designer to do a new obverse design as well? Such a result could only have been called a “Mercanti Double Eagle” design! It’s the biggest “What If?” in modern coin times… or it WAS the biggest because now Mercanti has actually done it—and this is your chance to get one of the exclusive limited-edition pieces now as a gleaming proof struck in two ounces of highly pure silver!
An Unquestioned Giant In The Numismatic World
The United States Mint’s former 12 Chief Engraver, Mercanti is an unquestioned giant in the numismatic world, a superstar talent who has produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history! After retiring from the Mint in 2010, Mercanti has stayed busy working with other world mints and lending a hand to special projects wherever his expertise has been needed. Even today, many coin experts consider him to be the most experienced and accomplished of the Mint’s great engravers. When we approached him about this program, the legendary master readily agreed and threw himself into the project. The result is nothing short of spectacular with a pair of designs that are the equal to anything that has appeared on U.S. coinage!
Awesome Designs Meticulously Sculpted By Hand
The obverse design shows a Majestic Bald Eagle in flight soaring high over a tree-lined mountain range while the sun and its rays can be seen rising in the background. The words, “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” can be seen at the top and bottom of the design along with the 2022 year date. The reverse depicts a stoic and proud eagle standing resolutely with an American Flag. The words “UNITED STATE OF AMERICA” and “DOUBLE EAGLE” appear at the top and bottom while the proof’s precious metal purity, “.999 SILVER,” and weight, “2 OZ,” appear on either side. If you look really close you can see Mercanti’s initials, “JM” just below the eagle’s tailfeathers. While Mercanti was one of the first artists to design coins using digital means, he’s also a classically trained sculptor and engraver who prefers to sculpt his designs in clay using his own two hands. Each ray of the sun, each feather on the eagles’ wings, each star and stripe on the U.S. flag, were all carefully sculpted by Mercanti demonstrate that human skill is the match of any computerized program!
High Relief, Reverse Proof Medals
The designs don’t just pop off the surface of these medals, they EXPLODE! That’s because each piece was struck in dual High Relief with towering devices that lurch upwards on BOTH sides! And, to highlight the stunning, high relief designs, a reverse proof finish was used. A reverse proof finish carries all the benefits of a traditional Ultra Cameo proof coin—multiple strikes; clean, sharp designs; frosted and polished finishes—yet with a distinct twist: Instead of the typical polished fields and frosted devices, these effects are literally reversed, with the fields frosted and the devices polished. The effect is always stunning, but particularly when combined with dramatic relief like this!
Flawless Proofs That Really Make The Grade
The combination of the high relief with the hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes makes these pieces seem more like miniature bas relief works of art. In fact, each piece available here has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended! In addition, NGC has certified that these proofs are First Day of Issue (FDI) releases, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date.
